Romania has experienced the largest growth in British migration of any other country over the past 10 years, United Nations figures show, as over 4.8 million Britons have left the country in the last ten years.

Thus, Romania has experienced a seven-fold increase in British migrants over the past decade, jumping from 6,600 in 2015 to 48,700 in 2024. In the same period, UK experienced a tenfold increase in migration from Romania, from 69,000 in 2015 to 713,000 in 2024.

Poland has experienced the second-highest growth rate, with a 340% increase, from 41,000 British migrants in 2015 to 184,900 in 2024. This significant rise places Poland as the seventh most popular destination overall and third in Europe – jumping seven places since 2015.

Australia remains the top destination for British migrants with over 1.1 million expats – nearly a quarter of all Britons living abroad (23%). However, migration to Australia has gradually declined by 8% over the past decade.

Spain remains the top European destination, ranking fourth worldwide with 294,900 British migrants, making up over one in 16 of all expats (6.1%), as a study by 5 Real Estate analysed United Nations 2024 data on international migrant stock.
