Drugstore chain BIPA is set to enter the Romanian market next year, marking a significant milestone in its international expansion. The move follows the company’s strong performance in Austria and Croatia.

Founded 45 years ago, BIPA is a household name in Austria, serving approximately 3.3 million regular customers. The retailer plans to bring its successful business model — already proven in Austria and Croatia — to Romanian consumers, offering competitively priced products in personal care, beauty, wellness, and baby care.

Local operations will be led by Martin Gaber, 56, an Austrian national with extensive retail experience. Gaber, originally from Mödling, Lower Austria, will assume the role of Managing Director for BIPA Romania starting 1 June. His previous roles include leadership positions at REWE International AG and international assignments in Italy and Slovakia, followed by a tenure at Marionnaud Austria under the AS Watson Group.

BIPA’s growth trajectory has been impressive: from 2021 to 2024, turnover rose by over 25% in Austria and more than 72% in Croatia. During the same period, 10 new stores opened in Croatia, bringing the total to 141, while the workforce expanded by 123 employees to 938.
