Following a vote in the Dutch parliament on Wednesday, the Netherlands has officially given the green light for the full admission of Bulgaria and Romania into the Schengen area, supporting the government’s recent decision, BNT reports.
The Freedom Party, led by Geert Wilders, proposed a parliamentary motion urging the government to consider the possible consequences of Bulgaria and Romania joining Schengen, but it was not adopted as other parties in the country’s ruling coalition expressed their reservations by voting against it.
If the decision on full Schengen membership for Romania and Bulgaria is approved by the Justice and Home Affairs Council on Thursday, land border controls between and with Romania or Bulgaria will be lifted from January 1, 2025.
