Foreign tourists spent around 520 EUR when visiting Romania

Accommodation accounts for 50% of this sum, followed by expenditure on restaurants/bars (18.5%) and shopping (13.9%)

Foreign tourists spent an average of 2,632 RON (524 EUR) in Romania in the first quarter of 2023, according to the latest National Institute of Statistics (INS) data.

Around 356,600 foreign tourists stayed at least one night in Romania in the first three months of 2023 and spent a total of 938.5 million lei (almost 190 million EUR). Business trips were the main reason for 58% of non-resident tourists arriving in Romania.

Interestingly, 38.1% of foreign tourists organized their stay in Romania on their own, 37.9% came through a travel agency, 15.5% opted for other ways of organizing their trip, while 8.5% organized their trip both on their own and through a travel agency.

The main means of transport used to arrive in Romania in Q1 2023 was by plane, used by 80% of the total number of foreign tourists, 15.5% used their cars, 3.5% coaches and buses, and 1% other means of transport.
