The Romanian new car market experienced a steep decline in May 2025, according to preliminary data from the Directorate for Driving Licenses and Vehicle Registration (DGPCI), analyzed by the Romanian Automotive Manufacturers and Importers Association (APIA).

In May, 10,456 new passenger cars were registered, marking a sharp 32.4% drop compared to May 2024. The downturn was even more pronounced in the electric vehicle (EV) segment, which fell 42.4% year-over-year, representing just 4.1% of the market share.

The broader picture isn’t more optimistic: between January and May 2025, 53,817 new cars were registered across Romania, a 12% decrease compared to the same period in 2024.
