Raiffeisen to acquire Garanti BBVA Romania in €591 million deal

Raiffeisen Bank has agreed to acquire 100% of Garanti BBVA Group Romania in a €591 million deal, a move that would lift Raiffeisen Bank Romanian branch to third place in the local banking market by total assets.

The transaction covers Garanti Bank S.A. and leasing unit Motoractive IFN S.A., and remains subject to regulatory approvals and closing conditions. Garanti BBVA Romania ended 2025 with about €4 billion in assets and roughly a 2% market share.

The closing is expected in the fourth quarter of 2026, after regulatory approvals from the competent authorities. Once completed, Raiffeisen Bank plans to merge the acquired units with its Romanian operations.

Garanti BBVA Romania’s market share is small in percentage terms, but the acquisition gives Raiffeisen a meaningful step up in a market dominated by large lenders. With this deal, Raiffeisen Bank S.A. is expected to become the third-largest bank in Romania by total assets.
