Flight bookings to Romania have rocketed 58.9% year-on-year since January 2026, with outbound traffic up 44.8%, as smaller airports steal the spotlight from Bucharest, according to fresh Kiwi.com data.

The Capital still handles two-thirds of arrivals, but regional hubs are rewriting the travel map, led by Brașov’s staggering 337% inbound and 391% outbound surge. Brașov-Ghimbav International Airport, newly operational, is the breakout star.

Craiova follows with +267.9% outbound and +138.5% inbound growth, while Sibiu clocks +175.9% departures and +74.3% arrivals. Suceava and Timișoara both exceed +50% outbound gains, with Cluj-Napoca and Iași delivering steady +19 – 39% rises.

Regional revolution challenges Bucharest dominance

Only Baia Mare and Satu Mare buck the trend with minor dips, negligible against the broader rally. Improved connectivity is shifting habits: travellers skip long hauls to Bucharest for local convenience, boosting secondary airports as LCCs and charters expand routes.
