Air travel soars: Passenger numbers hit record 12.77 million in H1 2025

Air travel in Romania is reaching new heights, with passenger traffic growing by 7.9% in the first half of 2025. A total of 12.77 million travelers passed through Romanian airports between January and June, up from 11.84 million during the same period in 2024.

Smaller airports are also benefiting from the surge. Brașov Airport celebrated its 500,000th passenger, while Sibiu International Airport recorded over 100,000 passengers in a single month for the first time in its history this August.

Henri Coandă International Airport – Bucharest remains the country’s busiest hub, handling 3.97 million boarding passengers and 3.88 million arrivals. Cluj-Napoca Avram Iancu International Airport ranks second, with 810,600 boarding passengers and 788,600 arrivals.

Top international routes

On regular flights, the busiest routes to Romania were from London Luton (533,655 passengers), Milan Bergamo (292,528), Munich (195,808), and Istanbul International (188,945). Other notable origins included Brussels Charleroi, Paris Beauvais, Vienna, Rome Fiumicino, Dortmund, and Madrid Barajas.

The main countries of origin for regular flights were Italy (1,172,988 passengers), the United Kingdom (886,758), Germany (710,326), Spain (527,803), and France (391,704).

Where Romanians are flying

Outbound passenger traffic reflects similar patterns. The most popular destinations included London Luton (543,194 passengers), Milan Bergamo (303,096), Munich (200,320), Brussels Charleroi (188,436), Istanbul International (180,462), Paris Beauvais, Vienna, Dortmund, Rome Fiumicino, and Barcelona.

Top departure countries for Romanian travelers were Italy (1,212,473), the United Kingdom (906,585), Germany (744,614), Spain (534,911), France (403,834), and Turkey (235,596). Domestically, Henri Coandă International Airport accounted for nearly half (49.4%) of all boarding passengers, followed by Cluj-Napoca (18.5%) and Timișoara (12.9%).
