Over ten percent of people aged between 15 and 64 tried at least one type of drug during their lifetime, and six percent consumed drugs in the previous year, according to the Romanian Anti-Drug Agency.
The highest drug consumption rates are observed among the young population (15-34 years), cannabis being the most consumed drug in Romania after new psychoactive substances.
There were 30 drug-related deaths, 25 of which were overdose deaths. but, the number of drug-related deaths continues to decline and the average age of death remains above 30 years.
1,742 cases of drug consumption-related medical emergencies were reported. Consumption of cannabis and new psychoactive substances are the main cause for these emergencies (27.5% for cannabis and 26.8% for psychoactive substances).
Medicine consumption was reported as the main cause of emergency cases in 23.8% of the total. Opiates were reported in 7% of cases, and stimulant use was reported in approximately 10% of cases (3.7% cocaine).
Also, 3,083 prisoners said that they are drug users upon entering detention, their share in the incarcerated population is 7.5%, a decrease of approximately 2.5 percent compared to 2021. The most consumed drug, especially before entering detention, is heroin.
