Two major public opinion research institutes have published similar exit poll results following the second round of Romania’s presidential elections. According to the data, Bucharest Mayor Nicușor Dan holds a lead of more than 10 percentage points over his opponent, George Simion.

The AVANGARDE institute reports that independent candidate Nicușor Dan secured 54.9% of the vote, while George Simion, representing the AUR party, received 45.1%. Meanwhile, a separate poll conducted by CURS shows a similar result, with Dan at 54.1% and Simion at 45.9%.

Nicușor Dan: “Today, a community of Romanians won—one that seeks deep change”

In his post-election statement following the release of the exit poll results, Nicușor Dan emphasized a message of unity and reform.

“Today, a community of Romanians won—one that wants deep change, a community that wants to reduce corruption, one that seeks a society built on dialogue, not hate,” Dan stated.

He went on to urge national unity:

“There are not two Romanias. We must fight for a united Romania. I want to assure everyone—both those who voted for me and those who did not—that I will do everything in my power to ensure the Romanian state finally serves its citizens.”

The mayor also called for patience:

“We are heading into a difficult period. We need time to lay the foundations for a healthy society. Starting tomorrow, we must begin the reconstruction of Romania.”

George Simion also claims victory

In a surprising turn, AUR leader George Simion declared himself the winner of the election, despite the exit poll results. Simion claimed he won by over 400,000 votes, stating:

“We claim victory in the name of the Romanian people,” he said, to sparse applause from a noticeably small audience.

During his speech, Simion also referenced political ally Călin Georgescu, declaring that “democracy has won” and pledging to focus on “the working people.” He extended thanks to Romanians living abroad, saying he looks forward to welcoming them back home.
