IKEA has confirmed plans to open its first store in Cluj-Napoca, as part of the RIVUS mixed-use urban redevelopment project. The new location will cover more than 17,000 square metres and is expected to open during IKEA’s 2029 financial year, which runs from September 2028 to August 2029. It will become the retailer’s fourth store in Romania.
The Cluj-Napoca store will introduce a different format from IKEA’s existing Romanian locations. It will also be the company’s first store in Southeast Europe integrated into a new mixed-use development from the planning stage.
A new IKEA format with 17,000 sqm of retail space
The store will offer a broad selection of IKEA furniture, home accessories and other products, with most items available for immediate purchase and collection. Customers buying larger or more complex products will be able to place orders in-store or online and arrange home delivery.
Despite its different format, the Cluj-Napoca location will provide services associated with traditional IKEA stores, including home planning consultations and order collection. It will also feature a Swedish Restaurant and a Swedish Food Market, bringing the brand’s food offering to the new development.
IKEA has been building its presence in Cluj since 2019
Although this will be IKEA’s first full-scale store in Cluj-Napoca, the company has operated smaller customer service formats in the city for several years. Its local presence began in 2019 with a kitchen planning point, followed by an order collection point in 2021 and a Planning and Ordering Studio in 2025.
IKEA currently operates three stores in Romania, including two in Bucharest and one in Timișoara. Its network also includes six Planning and Ordering Studios and five order collection points.
Part of IKEA’s €130 million Romanian investment plan
The Cluj-Napoca project forms part of IKEA’s recently announced three-year investment programme in Romania, worth approximately €130 million. Of that amount, €125 million is earmarked for expansion and development projects, while another €4.4 million will support price reductions during the 2027 financial year. IKEA has not disclosed a separate investment figure for the Cluj-Napoca store.
