More than 1,540 people died, and 3,550 were badly injured in road accidents on Romanian roads in 2023, the General Inspectorate of the Romanian Police (IGPR) informed on Sunday.
Compared to 2022, there were 190 fewer accidents, 88 fewer deaths and 160 fewer seriously injured people. In 2023, 225,887 driving licenses were suspended, of which 16,780 were for driving under the influence of alcoholic beverages offenses.
At the EU level, Romania (86 deaths per one million inhabitants) and Bulgaria (78/million) reported the highest fatality rates in 2022. The safest roads are in Sweden (22 deaths per one million inhabitants) and Denmark (26/million).
