After five years of construction, the city of Satu Mare has unveiled a striking new landmark: the Transilvania Bridge, now Romania’s longest cable-stayed bridge. Stretching 644 meters across the Someș River, the bridge is set to enhance connectivity between the city’s northern and southern districts.
The project, led by STRABAG, represents the city’s largest infrastructure investment in four decades. Its signature harp-like design features two towering pylons, each 73 meters tall, supporting 56 steel cables capable of bearing loads greater than 12,000 tonnes. The cable assembly itself weighs a staggering 227 tonnes.
Beyond its impressive size, the bridge incorporates cutting-edge technology. Drones equipped with LIDAR scanning mapped the structure’s anchorage points with remarkable precision, ensuring perfect alignment and tensioning of the cables.
The bridge offers four lanes for vehicles, two pedestrian sidewalks, and a dedicated bike lane
Local officials view the Transilvania Bridge as more than just infrastructure. “This is a new symbol for Satu Mare,” said Mayor Gábor Kereskényi. “It will unite our city physically and economically and stands as a testament to what modern engineering can achieve.”
Herbert Schuster, Commercial Subdivision Manager at STRABAG, highlighted the significance of the project: “It’s a milestone not only for Satu Mare but for Romanian infrastructure as a whole. We are proud to deliver a structure that combines advanced technology with lasting quality.”
