Romania’s cinema market reached a new high in 2025, with total box office revenue climbing to 63 million euro. That was up nearly 7% from 2024, even though admissions stayed broadly flat at 11.2 million, according to data from Cushman & Wakefield Echinox.
Cinema operators generated RON 318.2 million in revenue last year, compared with RON 292.9 million in 2024. The average ticket price rose to RON 28.4, up 8.8% year on year, which helped push revenues to record levels.
Admissions were almost unchanged from the prior year, suggesting demand has stabilized after the peak seen in 2023. Per-capita attendance remained at 0.59 visits, still low by developed-market standards but showing room for future growth.
Multiplexes dominate
The market remains heavily concentrated in multiplexes. These cinemas account for 96% of total revenues and 93% of admissions. That dominance is supported by the expansion of shopping centers, where most cinemas are located.
Bucharest leads the market
Bucharest remains the largest cinema market in the country, with about 3.4 million admissions across 11 multiplex cinemas. It is followed by Cluj-Napoca, Constanța, Timișoara and Brașov, which together account for a large share of national demand.
Local movies gain ground
A notable trend in 2025 was the stronger performance of Romanian films. Local productions accounted for 23.4% of admissions for premieres, a significant increase versus previous years. American films still dominate overall, with more than 58% of total admissions, but their share has eased compared with the 2021-2023 period.
